Following on from the inspiring demonstration by Rupert Aker in July, members gathered for the Guild August monthly meeting armed with paint and palette knives to try out the technique for themselves.

No matter what the medium selected the brief was to use only a palette knife to apply the paint. A number of members chose to use watercolours, whilst others brought water soluble or traditional oil paint.

Personally I went for a limited palette of traditional oils and worked a simple landscape on a 30x30cm canvas in the manner demonstrated by Rupert. It was quick and very satisfying.

There were 10 other members present and they all had fun with, for some, an unfamiliar tool – producing a variety of images and experimental pieces of work. Some had brought along pieces completed at home too.

Jane worked with watercolours.

Mike also worked with watercolours to make a start on a couple of pieces, he also brought in a finished and framed picture painted using a palette knife!

Jim experimented with watercolours to create a portrait. He also brought in two acrylic images that he had been working on.

Ellen and new member Gloria had fun with palette knives, oils, acrylics and a spoon!

Anna created a coastal scene.

Sonia created some colour swatches from the remnants of her palette. Good for some collage in the future?

Jenny brought in an lovely atmospheric coastal piece.

Joy said she really enjoyed the evening and the palette knife technique. Her pastoral scene was completed during the evening using one of her own photos as a reference.

Christine tried out a palette knife technique with watercolours on wet paper.
