Bristol’s Royal Academy presents it’s 168th Annual Open Exhibition, showcasing some of the most exciting artists from across the country and beyond showing from 5th December, 2020 to 7th March, 2021. We are delighted that GoWA member, Nicky Robinson has had a picture selected to be hung in this prestigious show.

Nicky’s piece is called ‘Thursday 8pm Lockdown 2020’ and is pen on orange paper.

Nicky writes: ” I wanted to mark the clap for carers and did a few pictures of empty rooms with clocks showing 8pm where the viewer is supposed to deduce the occupants have stepped outside to show their appreciation for key workers. As an NHS worker myself, I was really moved by the gesture.  It was quite scary the first day of lockdown driving on empty roads to the hospital, not really knowing what to expect. I saw the call for entries to the RWA open exhibition and submitted two of my lockdown pictures online for a small fee. I couldn’t believe it when one got chosen.

It was actually a bit tense, because I had also, in the meantime, submitted the chosen picture to a competition at the Ashmolean and it got shortlisted for that too!  Had to take the picture to Oxford for the final judging, but fortunately it didn’t win. It is on their website, but only the winners are displayed in the museum. I just had time to get it back and down to Bristol!”

Congratulations to Nicky, we hope that many members will be able to get to see her work hanging in the Exhibition in Bristol.
